MS Beagles Keep Flying

IMG_1915IMG_1969The Middle School Basketball (Boy + Eagles = Beagles) team continues to impress. After starting the season 4-0, we suffered our first loss in a hard-fought match against AIS Vienna.

We rebounded with a win against DIS, went 2-1 at our mid-season Festival in Budapest, and finished off a run of 7 games in 9 days with two more wins.

As much as we hate to lose, they’ve taken those losses in stride and have used them as motivation to work harder and get better.

Please continue to pray that these boys will continue to grow as players and as young men. And if they wanted to grow a little taller, that would be nice, too.  :)

MS Basketball Update

MS Boys Bball 2012

MS Boy Bball 2012

Our first game of the new year yielded another win for the Eagles. Or, as we’re now known, the “Beagles.” Shorthand for Boy Eagles. Apparently we needed to distinguish ourselves from the girl Eagles.

The home court at QSI Bratislava, if you can’t tell is in a bubble gym with and astroturf surface. This always makes dribbling a little adventurous. Entering the gym involves opening an outer door, crowding into a small entryway, making sure the outer door is shut, then pushing open the inner door to the gym. Opening both doors at the same time would begin deflating the gym.

In any case, the “Beagles” shook off the rust accumulated over Christmas break, played well and defeated QSI Bratislava on their astroturf court.

We hit the ground running next week with games on Monday and Tuesday. Stay tuned for more updates.

MS Basketball Season Underway

MS Basketball 2011-12Basketball season is well underway again and we’re just about to kick off another round of games. Before Christmas break, we won our first two games handily, executing well on offense and defense. I’m very proud of how my boys have played and look forward to the season ahead.

This Thursday we start a busy stretch of games, playing 5 games and a tournament in less than two weeks. Please pray for the next two weeks as we train and compete and stay tuned for more updates!

Fly Like a Cheese Stick: MS Basketball Final Update

Basketball
The ICSV MS basketball season ended with a 3rd place trophy last weekend.

Our first game was the best game of the tournament. We stormed back from an 8 point, 4th quarter deficit to send the game into overtime, only to lose by one point to the eventual champion. We easily won our next two games to finish 3rd overall.

We finished the season with a 9-4 record, placing 2nd in our mid-season tournament and 3rd in our final tournament. I’m very proud of my team for how much they improved over the season, and how hard they played each game!

More pictures to come.

ICSV Bball Update: 2nd Place!

BBall at QSI After a tough loss against the VIS A team (44-30), we rebounded at Saturday’s Festival to take 2nd place.

The Basketball Festival is an informal tournament against the teams in our conference. We cruised in our first game to a 27-7 win over the VIS B team, but it was in our 2nd game that we thrived. Against ICSB, the Christian school in Budapest, we really jelled as a team. We played great defense, moved the ball well on offense and emerged victorious with a hard-fought 24-20 win.

Winning our first 2 games placed us 1st in our pool and earned us a spot in the title game against DIS. Though we played hard and well, we fell behind early and never were able to catch up.  Even in defeat, they kept their heads up and played good basketball. I am really proud of all of them.

Highlights from the tournament:

  • 2nd Place!!!
  • Not one, but two bank 3-point shots made by our team.
  • “Coach Klein, isn’t that a demonic symbol? You know, a Pentagram?” “Um, no. That’s a Star of David.” (Our tournament took place at a Jewish community center).

Watch this space for another update in the coming days.

Fly, Eagle, Fly!

ICSV Basketball Update

BBall at QSIMiddle School basketball is well underway and the team is playing well. We’re currently sitting 2-0, due primarily to a brilliant coaching strategy I’ve implemented. It’s a system I call “The > Offense”. It’s a complicated system based on a fundamental concept: When we score more than the other team, we win. Or, stated mathematically, “Our Score > Their Score = Win.” I’ve done a lot of research and noted that every winning team without exception implements this same strategy. I really don’t know why everyone doesn’t do it.

Seriously, though, I’ve been blessed with a very talented team with a great attitude. They have fun, work hard and it’s paid off for them. Our victories came against QSI Bratislava(41-6) and VIS – B team(35-19). These victories came despite the fact that we can only practice once a week on a basketball court.BBall at QSI

Next week we have a game on Thursday against VIS (A team) and a tournament on Saturday. Thursday’s game will be a big test for them, but I have no doubt they will rise to the occasion.

Please pray for us next week.  Check back for an update next weekend.

Middle School Basketball

Middle School Basketball

Well, basketball season came to a close last Saturday. This was such a fun season! The girls really came together as a team this year. As coaches, Whitney and I were amazed to see how much they grew not only as basketball players, but as people. During the regular season we won two of our games and lost three.

Saturday we had a tournament with our newly formed league. We came in third place, winning two games and losing one. The girls were so excited about their trophy. However, they were even more excited when they won the sportsmanship trophy which was awarded to the team voted to have the best sportsmanship by the other teams and coaches. We are so proud of them for winning this award! As coaches that’s what we want for them – to grow in love for others as they grow to love their sport.

Here are most of the girls with their new trophies. Aren’t they cute?

The End of the Season

Middle School Basketball Basketball season is over. We had such a good time coaching this year. Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams grew so much during the season. My favorite example of this is the sweet girl pictured to the right who was scared to death to even be on the court at the beginning of the season. During our last game, she was on the bench next to me and she looked at Whitney (our head coach) and said, “Miss G. sub me in! I will box-out all those ladies!” It was fantastic.

MS Boys Basketball

Middle School Basketball I’m currently in the midst of basketball season with the middle school boys here at VCS.  We’ve had a lot of fun in practice, games, and on road trips.

Our current record is 1-4, but that doesn’t reflect the massive improvement I’ve seen this season. Another team even commented on how much they’ve improved since the last time we played!

We returned only three players from last season, but the new recruits are catching on quickly. Our last two games against QSI Bratislava and DIS were lost by 3 and 5 points respectively and were very well played. A few breaks here and there and we’d be 3-2 instead of 1-4.

We’ve got three more games on our schedule during the last week of February. Please pray that we will grow as a team in the next couple of weeks and perform well in our games.

21 Points!

Goodness! Time goes so quickly around the holidays. I can’t believe we’re already in the middle of January!

Christmas in Vienna was great. We hung out with friends, relaxed, and enjoyed the city. I even survived having Christmas without my family. That is definitely not my ideal, but like I said, I survived. :)

Last Monday we had our first middle school girls’ basketball game. We lost 21-38, but for a team of girls who have never played basketball before, 21 points was an amazing victory! We have two girls on our team who have played league basketball for several years (Americans, of course), but the rest of our team consists mostly of girls who hadn’t touched a basketball before December. I was so proud of them!

Anne Redner is the head coach and as we were discussing our goals for the team, we decided that we want them to play their absolute best and to learn to love being a part of a team. If they win games we’ll consider that icing on the cake. Knowing that those were our goals made watching our first game that much better. After the game one of the girls, who begged us not to put her in, told Anne that she wasn’t afraid anymore and that she had a lot of fun. Yay! Mission accomplished!
